In August of 2010, I competed in the Ironman in Louisville, Kentucky. I swam 2.4 miles in an 80 degree river. Then, with the air temperature reaching 102 degrees, I cycled 112 miles, followed by running a marathon: 26.2 miles. I was not brought up by parents who taught me to believe I could do anything I set my mind to. Instead, I was taught to believe that nothing I did would ever be good enough. For years I bought into that- hook, line, and sinker. So how did I get HERE? How did I start to live my dream life as an adventurer, Ironman, dad, husband, CEO, entrepreneur, and spiritual seeker? I always believed that a different life was possible. I wasn’t really sure what that life it looked like and I took some detours on my way to living and being the man I want to be each and every day.
It was a journey, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. A journey going from being flat broke a month after I got married in 1995, to being who I am today. This is a journey I didn’t take on my own. Luckily, I have been supported by a beautiful, resilient, fun, engaging, and athletic wife. And I might add, I have learned a new a thing or two from my wife’s Dad, who is an entrepreneur, and my own mother and father who are are self-employed as well. I was blessed with an extraordinary grandfather, who immigrated to America from Ireland, alone at the age of sixteen. And I have followed a path set out by great coaches and mentors.
On this journey, I became an entrepreneur and a father. In addition to my role as Editor In Chief of Beyond Limits Magazine and BillMurphy.tv, I am the CEO of RedZone Technologies, the Founder of CIO Executives Series, and Producer of CIOES TV. I’ve walked across 1200 degree coals seven times and earned my Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. I have completed BOSS, a week long survival school in which I learned to live off the land. And in the past year (2009- 2010) I have completed four triathlons; one Olympic distance, two half Ironman races, and finally, my first full distance Ironman.
My journey is not over. In 2011 I plan to complete: the Marathon Des Sables– a six day, 150 mile stage race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco, the Ironman Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, and Ironman Wisconsin. All while striving to grow as a CEO, father, and husband. Juggling different areas of my life is not always easy, but it is part of my journey, one I want to share with you in addition to sharing the stories of other people’s personal journeys through my blog, Bill’s Diary, and BillMurphy.tv.
